On a serious note, sometimes we have gone too far in our love for these creatures or the line has significantly blurred between a hobby and a problematic coping mechanism. I have 1 inch of dry coco fiber substrate on the bottom for the roaches and the super worms can be kept separated from each other. I only have 3 tarantulas and my lp is the one that eats like a garbage disposal

    You absolutely can. They wouldn't know any difference. I used to get to that point where I got down to just a few adults. You could also feed Spidey the juveniles since she doesn't eat much.

    You can absolutely get new roaches to add into your colony! I actually go out of my way to buy a new group of roaches once or twice a year to keep the colony healthy and diverse. I even make a point of getting my new Dubias from different sellers each time, just to avoid further inbreeding. I do initially keep the new Dubias separate for a couple of weeks, just to make sure that they’re healthy, no parasites, ect (it’s never happened, but I’m a worrier). Then I combine the groups. I’ve never seen an issue between them. Roaches are very peaceful. And there’s always a baby boom soon after a new group is introduced.

  • @jennfursketeer2323
    @jennfursketeer2323 4 дні тому

    I don’t think that they would recognize that the other cockroaches aren’t part of their “family.” I definitely understand the concern of disease though, especially if you’re getting them from a chain pet store (which are sometimes known for not keeping their animals in very healthy conditions). You could always isolate the new ones temporarily and make sure that they’re healthy before combining them with your existing colony. i’m pretty sure I heard somewhere that expanding the gene pool of roaches really doesn’t make any difference one way or the other, but as long as they are healthy, I don’t think it would hurt. That said, my colony is extremely small and hasn’t started breeding yet and all of the ones I’ve gotten have come from the same place in a fairly short period of time. but I haven’t noticed any issues when I add new ones. I have the opposite problem, my bigger ones aren’t adults quite yet, so they haven’t started breeding, and because I have primarily juvenile & baby tarantulas, I end up using up all the bitty ones. I end up having to replenish my supply every couple of weeks or so. I look forward to letting my big ones grow and mature, and start breeding!

    Dubias are by far the least gross and annoying of the food options! I hate hate hate hate HATE crickets but I usually keep some smaller ones on hand for the slings and for my leopard gecko. I keep my dubias in with my powder blue isopod colony which seems to work really well and is less gross to me than having a dirtless bin of roaches! 😝

      G/M Patricia. Another fine video on this hot and steamy Tuesday. Thanks for the info. on the super worms. I do keep a small amount of crickets. I have found clearing the dead out as soon as possible cuts down on the odors. I also keep springtails and isopods. Both enjoy the crickets. If my critters don’t eat right away I pull whatever I’ve offered. With their feeding schedule I’ve been pretty lucky. Stay cool, see you in a week.

    I have my t since 5 days and I'm always anxious about her being anxious xD.. at day time she doesn't really do anything, but at night she moves a bit, not enough to call it pacing in my opinion-- she's never kicked hair or threaten posed, I also haven't seen her hide under her legs.. she eats and drinks- yet I still find myself googling stress symptoms every night 😭

  • @kittysparkleeyes
    @kittysparkleeyes 12 днів тому

    I honestly don't believe an animal could exist and thrive for millions of years without the capacity for learning. My experience of my tarantulas is that they do learn. When i go to feed one, i notice others coming out because they know that signifies food. They also anticipate me dropping a cricket and will literally catch it in their "mouths" i also observed my salmon pink that i acquired from a show go from a balding and skitish animal to a fluffy little chunk that hangs out daily on it's hide. The change was simply giving it a planted terrarium instead of a plastic box full of soil. It is very very clearly less stressed as hair flicking causes baldness and a tarantula that is constantly hair flicking must feel threatened.

  • @ashy_studios
    @ashy_studios 13 днів тому

    I was really concerned since my tarantula is rather "small" for her enclosure (not tiny, I can always find her easily), she'll grow into it-- so I've been watching alot over stress behaviour, but she's genuinely moving quite little, staying in the same position for hours.. She eats and drinks, I haven't seen much borrowing or webbing yet but I've also only had her since 4 days-- and since she has a hide from me she sometimes retreats I think I can say she's quite comfortable! Which I'm so happy about since she's my first tarantula ever

Any social media that allows that sort of thing their CEOS need to be prosecuted and charged with endorsing and promoting animal abuse and cruelty. I think people need to start suing these media websites for allowing the disgusting criminal activity to continue!

    Hi Patricia! Please, can I ask for your help? Kind of a scary situation I think. I wanted to ask, can tarantulas die from stress? One of my tarantulas recently molted (a few hours ago) and I opened up the enclosure to refill her water dish. She then threw up a threat pose. After, even though I knew that P. Metallicas are photo sensitive, I tried taking a few pictures w flash on because my friends were egging me to show her beautiful colors and my little sister also kept looking at her with a flashlight on since she was fascinated by spiders. I stupidly allowed her because I really like it when people take interest in my beloved Ts. Then I tried placing a cover by her hide so she doesn't get hit by the light much anymore but again she threw up a threat pose. And right now I'm just really scared that she might end up leaving me permanently because of my actions... Is that possible?

    • @TarantulaHeaven
      @TarantulaHeaven 17 днів тому

      Yes! I am glad that your tarantula molted fine (sounds like she is actually a bit sassy now after her molt). I think she will be fine as long as you give her some alone time. Tarantulas can be defensive after a molt for several days because their bodies are still soft and vulnerable. So she may just be trying to signal that she wants her space to rest and get her strength. Just make sure she has some water and leave her alone for a few days. If her molt was fine I don't think she is having any abnormal behavior. Hope this helps!

    I’m really glad you brought up the lifespan aspect of tarantula keeping-that’s something I think gets so overlooked in that initial frenzy of collecting species. It’s so easy to just keep bringing home more and more-a new tarantula adds what, another couple of minutes per week to your routine? It’s so easy to justify it, and a few more really aren’t any more trouble-but you could potentially be doing this routine for 30 years! You may have to move at some point, so many things can happen-then you have 50-100 tarantulas to rehome. It’s such a long term commitment.

    I definitely became quite overzealous with buying slings when I started keeping tarantulas last fall/winter and while it’s tempting to keep buying more, I have decided to focus on enjoying the ones that I have and perfecting their care. It feels good to put that limit on myself because it keeps me present in appreciating my current spiders rather than focusing on what I don’t have and wanting more more more. And since I’m fairly new at keeping spiders, I also feel like it’s important to make sure I’m not being overwhelmed while I’m still trying to figure out the best way to provide what they need with humidity and such. There has been some trial and error, especially with the changing seasons where I live affecting how fast or how slowly the enclosures dry out, it’s easier to manage that with fewer spiders. thank you for touching on this topic, I think it’s important to pause and evaluate your limits and also to stop and think about what your collection will look like once all your slings are grown. I have some slower growers, but I also have a few that have grown pretty darn fast and have needed upgrades sooner than expected, and while it’s fun, I could see how it could become overwhelming pretty quickly.

    Unfortunately have to do this today with my OBT 🥺☹️ Spent days hoping he'd recover and not wanting to kill him myself but I can't keep letting him go on in such discomfort knowing he's just going to die anyway. I saw a thread on Arachnoboards wherein someone mentioned that blunt force may actually be more painful because the neurons(?) may still be intact in some parts of the body, and how freezing may not be painful as humans who've been close to freezing to death reported that they never felt any pain, only numbness, and only felt pain when they began to heat up again. Interesting takes. Thanks for your informative video and article on this, me and Shenzi (my OBT) surely appreciate it 💚

    Great video 😊 After l got over my horrible fear of spiders from my childhood and had a friend who had me handle a very large Mexican Red Knee l fell in love with them and had several Tarantulas over a period of 25 years. My two Mexican Red Knee Girls lived 20 and 25 years respectively. I kept them as Pets and handled mine every day. And I learned so much about them. Now when an outside spider finds it's way into my house the first thing I do is to tell it that I won't hurt it and cup catch them. Funny how you mentioned how you don't want a spider crawling on your face in bed And I just had this experience one week ago!!! I woke up to the spider walking on my cheek. I instantly reached up and gently grabbed it and set it on the bed while I grabbed my bedside flashlight. It was scared of Me and tried to hide but I just remained calm and was able to grab my empty glass of water and caught it no problem. I Do understand that there's still fear of the little ones that we were taught by from our parents. But I believe like you do. They are Very important and we should always try to be compassionate and respectful by not killing them. ❤

    I mix coconut fiber, reptisoil, reptile sand, sphagnum moss, and crushed charcoal together for all my animals I keep in bioactive setups. Not just my arachnids. Sometimes I also use mulch for the ones that need it a bit dryer but that’s the only change I make for them. I find it works best for burrowing, works best for springtails and isopods, works best for humidity, and it’s just overall the best mixture all around. I’d love to say I created this mixture recipe but I learned it from a fellow exotics keeper

    Why would someone defang a tarantula? thats animal cruality. Someone who does this should get their teeth removed. When i hold a tarantula as a pet, i have to accept she can bite when feel threatend like a cat can scratch you. If you cant handle it, dont get a tarantula as a pet. And a Pet store doing this should be closed by authorities. Im quite new to Spiders, i was afraid of them a feww month ago but felt in love with an Mexican red knee and a Bazillian Black and want on. Even they are considered docile im very well awaree they can bite or kick hair when they feel threatend. I would never got to the idea to defang my tarantula when i get it.

    G/M Patricia. I can’t dispute anything you said. Trying inform someone the spider in the house is a good thing is so difficult. I feel pulling teeth from tiger might be easier! I think a few of the issues between people and spiders lack of knowledge. Lack of respect. Not paying attention to the surroundings which one lives. Take away one piece of the pie. The atmosphere changes. I don’t think you are old enough to remember when Jaws came out. There was a mad rush to kill every shark in water. I saw people I thought respected our resources with a blood lust. Spiders sad to say are no different. I can only imagine the fear of a tarantula one would have in the wild. Humans are the most destructive force in nature. Sad but true. As an aside nice that hair is getting longer. Looks so good on you. See you in a week.

    G/A Patricia. Great information. You also pointed out some things I may be doing wrong. I have a few of tarantulas climbing the walls. I’ll be figuring out what’s wrong and fixing it. Thanks again see you in a week.

    Although this video is a year old lm very glad you posted this and it's posting again because I have seen cognitive thinking in my tarantulas. I had several over a period of 25 and treated them as pets. I also studied their behavior and found that they can perceive when they are loved and safe. I handled mine on a daily basis and they always were eager to be held and cuddled. None of them ever tried to get away from me and they made the choice to be held. They never stressed out and kicked hairs or threat posed either. I have received much hostile pushback for sharing this with others who collect them. I personally don't think that it's very humane to collect them in small enclosures and never give them any attention other than feeding. And I become very disturbed by people who say that they limit their food just to See them eat in a ferocious manner. My experience was wonderful and I have encouraged people to try to understand that they Are Sentient animals and Can think and make decisions on their own. Im getting one more since it's been a long time since I've had any. And my Tarantula will be very spoiled and well taken care of. I hope that more studies will be done soon to show people that they Do need larger enclosures that are going to enrich their lives even if they don't choose to handle them. I have a Great Love for them and they absolutely have them misunderstood in regards to their intelligence. Love your videos and please keep them coming ❤️

    Aw. My 19yo cat is currently recovering from breaking his leg. TBH it was a relief since I was convinced he was having a stroke, but he's just about back on his feet now. Every day with a cat his age is a matter of chance. Was Eva deaf? I'm asking because she talked a lot. It's funny how much she reminds me of my cat. He's not as good about getting up the stairs, though. His running around days have been over pretty much since day one lol! The lazy bastard.
